The town of North Walsham,
just 9 miles from the coast and as many from the Norfolk
Broads, (see websites..... www.horning-norfolk.co.uk
www.wroxham-norfolk.co.uk
has always been an important centre of population and trade
in this corner of Norfolk. Established in Anglo-Saxon times it
weathered invasions of Vikings and Normans to become an important centre
of the weaving trade in the middle ages. It is the largest of the
towns in the Local Government district of North Norfolk, and as such
was
scheduled for growth in the Norfolk Structure plan. The population
has steadily increased as many find the town agreeable, and a wide range
of housing is available. The main retailing shops and businesses
are all within easy reach of the Market Place, offering a choice from
the large supermarket and household names to the individual service of
the local shopkeepers with many interesting specialist shops. Services
within the town are excellent, with an array of eating houses,
hostelries and take-aways, main motor dealerships & garage
forecourts, major banks & building societies,
a library, leisure & sports facilities, to
highlight but a few. The thriving industrial estates are home to
engineering companies, boat builders, agricultural suppliers, plastics,
double glazing, glass engravers, hauliers, and dozens of other small to
medium sized businesses. Road connections to the port of Great Yarmouth
(See www.greatyarmouth-norfolk.co.uk
for the Great Yarmouth website) the City of
Norwich and beyond are good, with a regional rail service to both
Norwich and the seaside resorts of the North Norfolk coast an added
asset. There are miles of good
footpaths around North Walsham including the Weavers Way long distance
path which links in with others so that you can work out your own
circular walk.
Worstead Festival
held at the nearby village of Worstead at the beginning of August each
year is well worth a visit. The festival virtually takes over the
village and nearly all the village folk are involved in the three day
celebration of arts, crafts music and main arena events.
North Walsham offers a warm welcome
whatever time of year you visit. Once found you are sure to come
back.
